Best Mouthwash For Receding Gums

Struggling to select the best mouthwash for receding gums?

There’s a few out there. Each manufacturer claims they are the solution to halt gum recession or aid the symptoms caused by it.

And mouthwash for receding gums doesn’t come cheap.

For that reason, it’s important to ensure you’re buying the right mouthwash for both your gum health and your pocket.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at two of the best mouthwashes for receding gums available in the supermarkets.

Manufacturers claim to fame

Thanks to their TV advert, everyone knows Corsodyl as the go-to brand for people who suffer from bleeding gums.

As well as their mouthwash for receding gums, they manufacture toothpaste and floss and their products are aimed at helping to prevent gum disease.

The theory is if we can prevent gum disease then we can halt receding gums.

How corsodyl mouthwash works

The active ingredient in Corsodyl mouthwash is called chlorhexidine digluconate.

This works as an antiseptic in your mouth. Corsodyl mouthwash has been shown to have many uses including relieving mouth ulcers, combatting oral thrush, rinsing partially erupted wisdom teeth and aiding gum disease, which is a cause of gum recession.

Issues with Corsodyl mouthwash for receding gums

Staining is a major problem with the frequent use of chlorhexidine mouthwash. Tough brown stains can form around your gum line and between your teeth. Although temporary and nothing to worry about, these usually have to be removed by a hygienist.

It can also cause taste disturbances and some temporary tingling of your tongue and cheeks. Also, you won’t get that popping minty freshness after use.

Lastly, it can be deactivated by certain kinds of toothpaste. Look at the ingredients of your toothpaste and check for ‘sodium lauryl sulphate’ as this will stop the Corsodyl from working. If your toothpaste contains this ingredient either switch toothpaste or wait at least 30 minutes between using the toothpaste and chlorhexidine mouthwash.

My professional advice

Corsodyl mouthwash can help halt receding gums caused by gum disease, but I’d only recommend usage if directed to by your dentist.

Corsodyl mouthwash will never correct the underlying cause of gum disease on its own. You need to seek professional advice from your dentist or hygienist to establish why you have bleeding gums to ensure you prevent further gum disease.

Corsodyl mouthwash should only be used as a supplemental aid once the cause of your receding gums has been established, and may not be needed at all.

Think of it like power washing weeds off a patio. The mouthwash will remove the weeds temporarily, but unless you remove the roots they’ll simply grow back.

best mouthwash bleeding gums - listerine

Manufacturers claim to fame

Listerine is traditionally known as an exceptionally fresh-tasting mouthwash that can kill up to 97% of bacteria in your mouth.

There are several types of Listerine mouthwashes available on the shelves, so let’s hone in ‘Listerine Advanced Defence Gum Treatment’ which is manufactured specifically for gum disease. Listerine claim this will reduce plaque, maintain healthy gums, treat gum disease and give you that famous fresh breath.

Ow listerine receding gums mouthwash works

Listerine’s receding gums mouthwash has moved away from its traditional essential oil formula and has added an ingredient called Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate HC. Don’t get hung up about the name, but the magic ingredient has been used as an antimicrobial in food packing for years and has shown to have a plaque inhibitory effect.

So, if we can inhibit plaque growth on the teeth then it won’t irritate the gums and therefore your gums won’t recede.

Issues with Listerine mouthwash

Listerine classically contains alcohol. This can cause a burning sensation in your mouth which for some people can be too strong.

My professional advice

Independent studies show Listerine Advanced Defence Gum Treatment Mouthwash does work when used twice a day as quickly as two weeks into treatment.

However, like Corsodyl mouthwash this should never be used instead of mechanical brushing, only as an addition to your regime.

Listerine will easily kill bacteria floating around in your mouth, however, it struggles if bacteria are layered onto your tooth surface. The only way to remove this bacteria is by brushing and flossing which physically knocks it off. Once it has been freed Listerine mouthwash will be more effective.

Again, always speak to your dentist before using any over the counter mouthwash for receding gums. This way you’ll ensure you’re treating the cause and not just buying expensive products that may be suboptimal.

And importantly when choosing the best mouthwash for receding gums…

There are many causes of gum recession and treatment to reverse it doesn’t always work.

It’s crucial you go to your dentist to establish why your gums are receding to prevent any further advancement.

Even the best mouthwash for receding gums only works in combination with professional treatment from your dentist. Boor your free video consultation today!
