It’s important to remember that the dental implant process involves several appointments and steps which we will outline when we discuss your treatment plan. Dental implants consist of a small titanium post inserted into the jawbone, which serves as a stable foundation for a crown, bridge, or even full dentures. Unlike other options like bridges or dentures, dental implants offer a fixed, secure solution that looks, feels, and functions just like your natural teeth.

What does the dental implant procedure involve?
The process of getting dental implants is tailored to each patient, but here’s a general overview of the steps involved:
1. Initial consultation and treatment planning
Your journey begins with an initial consultation at Smile Stories. During this appointment, we will take a holistic look at your oral health, take 3D scans, and assess your jawbone density to determine if you’re a good candidate for implants. We’ll discuss your treatment options, answer any questions, and create a personalised treatment plan for you.
2. Preparation and bone grafting (if required)
If you have insufficient bone density to support an implant, you may need a bone graft. Bone grafting involves adding bone material to the jaw, which will then integrate with the existing bone over a period of several months. This step isn’t necessary for everyone, but it’s essential for those who need additional bone support to ensure the implant is secure.
If you don’t need a bone graft, then there really isn’t much prep at all. We advise that you eat normally, and you may be advised to rinse with a special antibacterial mouthwash a few days prior to having your implants fitted.
3. Dental implant placement
The implant placement is a minor surgical procedure which is performed under local anaesthesia, although sedation options are available if you feel anxious about the procedure. Rest assured, you’ll always be comfortable and completely numb throughout the implant placement.
We will make a small incision in the gum to access the jawbone, where they will drill a small hole to insert the titanium implant post. This post acts as the root of your new tooth. After the implant is in place, the gum is stitched up, and you’ll go through a healing period known as osseointegration.
4. Healing and osseointegration (waiting for the implant to fuse to the bone)
This is perhaps the longest stage of the dental implant procedure, lasting between two to eight months. During this time, the implant fuses with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation for the crown. We like to fit a temporary crown during this time to protect the implant and allow you to eat and speak normally.
5. Placement of the abutment
Once osseointegration is complete, the next step is placing an abutment on the implant. The abutment is a small connector piece that will hold your new tooth., and for some people the abutment can be placed at the same time as the implant, but in others, it’s added after the initial healing period.
6. Fitting your final new teeth (crowns)
Finally, once your gums have healed, we will attach a custom-made crown to the abutment. This crown is crafted to match the shape, colour, and size of your natural teeth, so it blends seamlessly with your smile. If you’re getting multiple teeth replaced, you may receive a bridge or denture instead.
How Long Does a Dental Implant Procedure Take?
The entire dental implant process can take anywhere from four to nine months, depending on your individual treatment plan. Here’s a general timeline breakdown:

- Implant placement Surgery: 1-2 hours per implant
- Healing and osseointegration: 2-8 months
- Abutment placement: 1-2 weeks for healing
- Crown placement: 1-2 appointments

How Painful is the Dental Implant Procedure?

Sedation options are available for patients who feel particularly anxious, so there’s no need to worry about the procedure being painful. You may experience some discomfort after the anaesthesia wears off, but this is generally manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
