What is dental avulsion?

Put simply, dental avulsion is when a tooth gets completely knocked out of its socket. It’s not just loose or wobbly like a luxated tooth, it’s fully out. You’ll usually see the whole thing, root and all, and it can be a bit of a shock.

This type of injury is usually caused by sudden trauma, like a sports accident, fall, bike crash, or even an elbow to the face. Unlike a chipped or fractured tooth, where part of the tooth is still in place, tooth avulsion injuries are a full separation of the tooth from the jaw.

It’s considered one of the most urgent dental emergencies, and we see it time and time again. Why? Because the quicker you act, the more chance you have of saving the tooth. Ideally, you want to get professional help within 30 – 60 minutes which is the golden window for reimplantation.

If treated quickly, many avulsed teeth can be replanted and stabilised. But even if the tooth can’t be saved, there are excellent replacement options that can restore your smile to full strength.

So, if you’ve had a tooth knocked out, don’t wait and hope for the best. Dental avulsion needs fast action, and that’s exactly what we’re here for.

What to do if your tooth is knocked out

If you or someone you know has had a tooth avulsion injury, here’s what to do straight away:

  • Find the tooth –  pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
  • Don’t scrub it – if it’s dirty, rinse it gently with milk, saliva or saline.
  • Try to reinsert it – if you can, gently push the tooth back into the socket and bite down on a clean cloth.
  • Keep it moist – if you can’t reinsert, store it in milk or hold it inside your cheek.
  • Get to us ASAP – the sooner we see you, the higher the chance of saving the tooth.

What happens at your emergency appointment

When you arrive at Smile Stories, here’s how we’ll help:

  • Quick chat + reassurance – you’ll explain what happened, and we’ll get straight to work.
  • Check the injury – we’ll gently examine your mouth, gums, and jaw to see the full extent of the trauma.
  • 3D scans or X-rays if needed – these show us whether the socket or surrounding bone has been damaged.
  • Reimplant the tooth (if possible) – if the tooth can be saved, we’ll reposition it and stabilise it with a splint.
  • Pain relief + aftercare plan – whether we replant or replace the tooth, you’ll leave with a clear plan for what’s next.
