There can come a time in a tooth’s life where it gets into a bit of trouble – it could have been filled multiple times or the life may have been knocked out of it due to injury.
If a dental issue progresses to the point where the tooth dies, it’s referred to as irreversible pulpitis.
The pulp chamber houses the tooth’s nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue, and when it becomes infected or inflamed, it can cause severe pain and lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
Root canal treatment is also known as a root filling and the aim is to keep your tooth in your mouth.
Root filling, in basic terms, is an extension of a procedure that begins from the top of your tooth, the crown, and goes all the way down to the root.
Within your tooth is a tube-like structure that runs from top to bottom.
This tube must undergo a three-step process: cleaning, widening, and finally, filling.
The root filling process involves filling the tube, starting from the visible part of your tooth and extending to the end of the root located beneath your gum.
We understand that the thought of a root canal may make you feel slightly anxious, but rest assured, our compassionate team is here to guide you through the process with care and expertise. Here’s what you can expect during your root canal treatment at Smile Stories:
Before any dental work is done, we will have an initial consultation with you where one of our dentists will examine your tooth, review your medical history, and discuss your symptoms and treatment options. We’ll take the time to address any concerns or questions you may have and ensure you feel comfortable and informed before proceeding with any treatment.
Preparation – Before beginning the root canal procedure, your dentist will administer local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and will ensure you remain comfortable throughout the treatment.
Accessing the tooth – Once you are numb and comfortable, the dentist will create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp chamber and root canals. This allows us to remove the diseased tissue and thoroughly clean the inside of the tooth to remove the buildup of bacteria and debris.
Cleaning and shaping the canal – Using specialist instruments, we will carefully clean and shape the root canals to remove any remaining infection and prepare them for the filling.
Filling and sealing – Once the root canals are cleaned and shaped, they will be filled with a biocompatible material which prevents bacteria from re-entering the tooth. The opening in the tooth will then be sealed to protect it from further infection.
Dental restoration – Depending on the extent of damage to the tooth, a dental crown or filling may be placed to restore its strength, function, and appearance. We will discuss your restoration options with you and recommend the best solution to meet your needs.
Follow-up care – After your root canal treatment is complete, we will provide instructions for after care and book you in for a follow-up appointment to keep an eye on how it is healing.

You might need a root canal if you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold foods, or swelling around the tooth. These symptoms are often signs of infection or inflammation in the tooth pulp, which can be caused by deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures.
Root canals have a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to pain. But, modern root canal treatment is virtually painless. We use local anaesthesia to numb the area around the tooth, ensuring you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. You might feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but it’s nothing in comparison to the toothache you’re experiencing.
The length of time a root canal procedure takes can vary depending on the complexity of the damage to the root and the number of tooth roots involved. On average, a root canal can take anywhere from 60 to 120 minutes per tooth.
After your root canal treatment is complete, you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity, which is perfectly normal. We will provide you with post-procedure instructions and may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to help manage any discomfort. You’ll also need to be careful when chewing on the treated tooth until it’s fully healed to prevent any damage to the temporary filling or crown.
With proper care and maintenance, a root canal can last a lifetime. After your root canal treatment, you must brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and visit us for regular check-ups and cleanings. By taking care of your teeth and gums, you can ensure your root canal remains a lasting solution for a healthy, happy smile.
Whether you’re looking to get out of immediate trouble or a long term general dentist to look after the health of your mouth, we can help.
The sooner you treat a tooth, the less complex and costly it is.
We’re open 8-8 weekdays and Saturdays and will do our best to ensure you’re seen as soon as possible.
