Why you should have a custom-made gum shield?

Hand made, bespoke to your teeth, polished and smoothed for maximum comfort.

Custom mouthguards, sports guards or gum shields are suitable for many different sports where there is a risk of impact to your mouths, such as rugby, martial arts, hockey, boxing, MMA, mountain biking and skateboarding. They also provide protection from clenching and subsequent tooth wear in sports such as Crossfit and weight lifting.

They spread any impact across your whole mouth instead of just a few teeth to reduce the risk of damaging them. They help to prevent bruises, cut lips and gums, damage to crowns and bridges and other injuries around your mouth.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a ‘rubber’ protector worn over your teeth to soften blows made to your mouth and teeth. It’s usually only made for the upper teeth, although they can be worn for both.

It’s actually made of Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (or EVA), which is layered depending on which sport you play.

Which thickness is right for your sport?

If you do non-contact sports like Crossfit, weightlifting, skating or football then a 2mm mouthguard is fine.

For contact sports, you need at least 4mm thickness of EVA for adequate protection. Boxing, MMA, hockey, rugby and LaCrosse players should wear these.

You can choose your colours and place a logo in your mouthguard

What the difference between stock gum shields, boil and bite and custom made mouth guards?

Stock mouthguards should be avoided at all costs. They’re cheap for a reason, but can’t be adapted and provide completely inadequate protection for your mouth.

Boil and bite mouthguards are bought over the counter. You place them in hot water for a few minutes, then place them in your mouth and suck on them to get them to fit as well as possible.

These have a place for growing children who are losing their teeth quickly and their mouths are changing constantly, but misshape easily and are not perfectly adapted to provide ultimate protection.

Custom mouthguards give the ultimate protection. Not only are they a bespoke fit to you and perfectly adapted to your mouth, but they are also fully customisable to look exactly how you want them.

Custom gum shields fit better, so they’re less likely to make you gag and cause ulcers.

How do you clean a mouthguard?

After you’ve used the mouth guard it will need cleaning to stop the build-up of bacteria and fungi.

You can use warm soapy water and a toothbrush. Make sure the water isn’t too hot or your gumshield may distort and don’t use toothpaste as it will cause unnecessary wear.

If your mouth guard looks quite dirty then Retainer Brite should do the trick.

How long do custom-made mouthguards last?

This depends on how much you’re wearing it.

Gum shields will wear down. As they become thinner they will lose the ability to protect your teeth. So if you’re wearing it for a busy rugby season I’d recommend replacing it yearly.  If you seldom wear it to skateboard then it could last years. If you’re in any doubt then take it to your dentist to have a look at it and they can advise you if it has seen better days.
