Luke and his peg tooth

What’s the story with peg lateral teeth?

A ‘peg tooth’ or ‘peg lateral tooth’ is a tooth that appears smaller than what you’d expect and affects 1.8% of the population. Now that may not sound like much, but in the UK that’s a whopping 1.2 million people.

You certainly are not alone if you’re one of them.

Peg lateral teeth are those adjacent to your upper front teeth. Because humans are so finely tuned to other humans they get noticed.

A slight discrepancy away from the ideal norm when smiling and talking will draw the eye to peg teeth, and this is what bothered Luke.

The Peg Tooth Plan

We followed the Smile Stories signature smile makeover sequence for the perfect result.

A — Align — Invisalign

Invisalign to widen Luke’s smile, align and uncrowd his top and bottom teeth, but crucially to leave gaps next to his lateral incisors. These gaps will mean we can add composite to make the teeth the right widths.

The great thing about Invisalign is we can plan the exact widths of the spaces we leave either side of the peg tooth.

B — Brighten — Teeth Whitening

Everyone wants straight white teeth, Luke included, so we did some professional teeth whitening

Remember, composite and porcelain don’t change colour, so we whiten before matching the contouring material to the colour of your newly gleaming teeth.

C — Contour — Composite Bonding

The final part of Luke’s mini smile makeover for his peg lateral teeth was composite bonding to fix the edge on the front tooth and two composite veneers to the peg lateral incisors. These restored the perfect proportions in less than 3 hours.

Here’s more details about teeth straightening with  Invisalign at Smile Stories’ cosmetic dentists in Bournemouth.

Composite Bonding for the win

To finish Luke’s smile we used highly-polished, hand-sculpted composite bonding to repair the chip on the front tooth and build up the peg teeth to be the perfect dimensions.

In under 3 hours Luke’s teeth were repaired and restored and nobody would ever know the difference between the composite and his teeth.

Composite can be used to

  • Repair worn teeth
  • Fix chips
  • Completely mask a tooth as a veneer, like we did on Luke’s peg tooth.

Invisalign FAQs

Can you eat with Invisalign?

You will need to remove your Invisalign aligners when eating. You can also remove them for special occasions and when playing sports, but remember to wear them 22 hours daily.  Find out more here.

How long does Invisalign take?

Invisalign treatment can take around 12 – 18 months, but it can be as quick as six months, depending on the complexity of your treatment.

Find out more detail about this topic here.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the first FDA-approved clear aligner teeth straightening system, used by more dentists than any other brand of clear aligner. It means you can straighten your teeth without people knowing.

Will you need a retainer?

Always. It doesn’t matter whether you use Invisalign or old train track braces. Without a retainer, your teeth will move back a certain degree.

We can provide fixed retainers (a thin piece of metal behind the teeth) or removable retainers (similar to the Invisalign aligners). This is down to you, and we can discuss which option is best at your consultation. Find out more about retainers here.

How much does Invisalign cost?

The cost of Invisalign teeth straightening will depend on the severity of the case. On average, the price will be between £1,500 and £3,995.

How does Invisalign work?

The Invisalign system uses 3-D digital scans of your teeth to make a series of custom made clear plastic aligners. Every week, you change your aligners for the next ones in the set until you have used them all. During this time, you will have face-to-face dental appointments every six to ten weeks to check your progress, as well as virtual check-ins to ensure everything is seamless weekly.

Can you smoke with Invisalign?

We’d discourage you from doing this as it can cause staining to the aligners. Although you don’t wear them for long, they will still darken. Find out more here.
