Why is dental implant aftercare essential?

We often like to think of dental implants as you would the foundation of a house: they need time and care to settle firmly. How you treat your implants in the days, weeks, and months after your procedure can make all the difference in their success.

Making sure your dental implants heal correctly significantly reduces the risk of complications like infection or implant failure and means that smile remains as brilliant as the day you got it. Smile Stories is here to guide you every step of the way, offering personalised advice and ongoing care.

Dental implants immediate aftercare: the first 48 hours

The first two days after your dental implant procedure are critical for setting the tone for your recovery and can make or break your recovery time. We’ve got some tips for making sure the first 48 hours after the dental implants procedure goes smoothly:

  1. Manage discomfort if you need to – It’s normal to experience some mild swelling, bruising, or soreness around the implant site. To stay comfortable, you can use over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, as directed by your dentist. You could also apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek in 10-minute intervals to reduce swelling.

  1. Eat soft foods – Stick to a soft food diet to avoid putting pressure on your implant site.

  1. Avoid straws as much as possible – Suction from using a straw can dislodge the blood clot around your implant site, which can slow the healing process. Drink directly from a cup or glass instead to prevent this from happening.

  1. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke – Both can delay healing and increase the risk of infection. Smile Stories recommends avoiding alcohol for at least 72 hours and quitting smoking altogether, if it is possible to do so.

Oral hygiene tips for dental implant aftercare

Keeping your mouth clean is the most vital way to prevent infection and encourage your implant to heal correctly. However, you’ll need to adapt your routine slightly:

Brushing

We recommend that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing directly over the implant site for the first week to avoid irritation. You should gently clean the surrounding teeth and gums as normal.

Rinsing

We suggest that you avoid rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot that will form as part of the healing process. After that, use a rinse solution provided by your dentist 2 – 3 times a day to reduce bacteria and soothe the area.

Flossing

You can resume flossing after a few days, but avoid the implant site until your dentist gives the green light.

Ongoing dental implants aftercare: the weeks ahead

  1. Slowly get back to your usual diet – As your implant heals, you can slowly reintroduce firmer foods. However, avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for at least 6-8 weeks.

  1. Protect your implant as much as possible – If you play sports or grind your teeth at night, ask us about mouthguards. Protecting your implant during is so important – you don’t want to cause any unnecessary stress to the implant site.

  1. Keep an eye out for complications or infections – Complications with dental implants are rare, but you should keep an eye out for persistent swelling or pain beyond two weeks, signs of infection, such as redness, warmth, or discharge, or if you have difficulty chewing or biting.

If you notice anything unusual, remember that Smile Stories is just a phone call away.

Dental Implant Aftercare FAQs

How long does it take for a dental implant to heal?

Dental implants can take anywhere from 3 – 6 months to heal, but that depends on factors like your health and where abouts in your mouth the implant is located. During this time, osseointegration (the process of the implant fusing with your jawbone) occurs.

Can I brush my dental implant right away?

You can brush your teeth, but avoid the implant site for the first week. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle motions.
