What kind of dental emergencies do we treat?

We are able to treat a wide variety of dental emergencies at our clinic, including all of the below.

However, if you have heavy bleeding, severe injuries, swelling of the throat and neck or altered vision then we advise you go straight to A&E for treatment.

We’re on hand for:

Sudden, unbearable toothache

Are you experiencing a sudden and excruciating toothache that is making it difficult to function? Seek urgent care from our emergency dentists to receive immediate relief and address the underlying cause of your pain. Severe toothache can stem from various dental issues, such as tooth decay, dental abscesses, cracked or fractured teeth and advanced gum disease. All of these are serious issues which should be dealt with quickly.

Accidents, injuries and knocked out teeth

Have you suffered a dental accident or injury that requires immediate attention? Don’t delay seeking help. Our emergency dentists are experienced in treating dental trauma, providing swift and effective care to restore your oral health and smile. Accidents and injuries might include getting teeth knocked out, breaking or fracturing teeth and teeth that have become loose or dislodged. If you have had a tooth knocked out, make sure you keep hold of it as we may well be able to re-implant your own tooth within an hour of losing it.

Abscesses and infections

Are you experiencing severe dental pain accompanied by swelling and fever? These symptoms could indicate a dental abscess or infection, which requires immediate attention from our emergency dentists. Our specialised team can provide rapid relief and prevent serious complications associated with dental infections. Abscesses commonly result from untreated tooth decay, cracked teeth, gum disease or previous dental procedures, so ensure that any dental issues you are having get checked as soon as possible to prevent an emergency from happening.

Wide variety of other dental issues

There are a wide variety of dental emergencies that can occur, including toothache, gum infections, broken crowns, pain in your wisdom teeth, chipped teeth, tooth decay, swelling and many other oral health issues. Any dental issue causing severe pain, swelling, bleeding or compromising oral function should be considered a dental emergency. Prompt treatment can alleviate pain, prevent further complications, and preserve oral health.

What to expect during your emergency dental appointment

  1. Assessment and diagnosis: Our dentists will talk to you and work out what’s going on and why. They’ll check your symptoms, conduct diagnostic tests such as x-rays and inspect the affected area under magnification to better understand the dental issues you are facing. We’ll get to the bottom of what’s going on and why.
  2. Pain management: Dental emergencies are unpleasant. so we’ll get you out of pain as quickly as we can using local anaesthetic.
  3. Treatment: Problem permitting, we’ll perform immediate treatment as an interim solution until you’re able to get a long-term fix.
  4. Become a member: Ensure the problem never happens again. At Smile Stories we limit the number of new clients we see monthly to ensure our current clients get the best experience possible, but if we can help you with long-term health then we will.

Emergency Dentist FAQs

How much is an emergency dentist?

The cost of your emergency dental appointment is clear and transparent. Unlike some clinics, we don’t charge a base fee for an appointment then add on extras for the treatment or antibiotics. The fee is £245 and you’ll receive a dedicated appointment that will get you out of trouble for the problem that you’re having.

Can an emergency dentist remove teeth?

Our dentist is capable of tooth extractions, but it depends on your individual situation. It may not be possible or the correct treatment to get you out of pain on the day.

Can you get an emergency dentist appointment if you are not registered?

You do not need to be registered with Smile Stories to get an emergency appointment. Contact us as soon as possible and we will aim to fit you in. It’s worth noting that emergency appointments at Smile Stories are single visits and do not mean that you are a member of the clinic, nor are we obliged to register you as a patient.

Do emergency dentists do fillings?

Yes, our emergency dentist can do interim fillings until you can find a permanent solution by registering at a dentist.

Are emergency dentists open on Sunday?

We can offer emergency dental appointments on a Sunday by appointment only.

Can an emergency dentist do a root canal?

A root canal treatment is required if you have a severe problem with your tooth due to decay or trauma. While our emergency dentist won’t do a root canal treatment as an emergency treatment, if they need to put medicine into the root canals to help with your pain and get you out of trouble then they will.

Can an emergency dentist prescribe antibiotics?

Yes, our emergency dentists can prescribe antibiotics to help you fight off any spreading infections if they’re indicated. Usually antibiotics are a last resort and we’ll do everything we can to sort the problem, not mask it with antibiotics unless we have no other choice.

Can an emergency dentist remove wisdom teeth?

Yes, our emergency dentist can remove wisdom teeth, but not at your emergency appointment. The dentist will get you out of trouble with an interim solution for your wisdom teeth and often this is enough to help. Wisdom teeth removal often requires a subsequent appointment with an Oral Surgeon which we can offer at Smile Stories.

Get Out of Pain

Whether you have toothache, broken teeth, pain or swelling our team is on hand to help you.

We’re open 8-8 weekdays and Saturdays and will do our best to ensure you’re seen as soon as possible.
