Had a bump to the face and now your tooth feels a bit off? Whether it’s wobbly, pushed out of place, or just not quite right, you might be dealing with something called tooth luxation, which is just a fancy way of saying your tooth’s been moved from where it’s meant to be.
At Smile Stories, we deal with this kind of thing all the time; it’s our job to make sure your tooth is looked after properly, get you out of pain, and help your smile heal up safely.
Tooth luxation is when a tooth has been knocked around but hasn’t fallen out completely, it’s still in your mouth, but it’s been moved in the wrong direction or loosened. Sounds a bit wild, but don’t panic, it’s more common than you’d think, and most of the time, we can fix it.
We treat all sorts of dental trauma here in Bournemouth, and luxation is one of those sneaky ones that seems small but needs fast attention to prevent long-term issues from arising.

There are a few types of tooth luxation, and how we treat it depends on what’s happened to your tooth.
This happens when your tooth is still in place, but it’s loose. Maybe you’ve noticed some bleeding at the gum line or it hurts when you bite down. It’s usually sore but still hanging in there.
We’ll check it out, take a scan if needed, and might pop on a flexible splint to hold it steady while it heals. Most people recover just fine from this without any major intervention.
Look out for:
If your tooth looks like it’s shifted sideways or feels ‘stuck’ in a strange position, you’re likely dealing with a lateral luxation. The tooth’s been shoved into the socket wall, and it usually doesn’t want to budge.
We’ll gently move it back into place (don’t worry, we numb the area first), then secure it with a splint. The sooner we see you, the better the outcome and more likely the tooth can be saved.
You might notice:
With extrusive luxation, your tooth has been partially pulled out of the socket, so it might look longer than your other teeth or feel super sensitive.
We’ll reposition it, splint it, and keep an eye on the nerve inside, but sometimes we’ll need to do a root canal later on. There’s no need to panic if this is the case, we’ll guide you every step of the way.
Signs of extrusive tooth luxation include:
This is one of the more serious types of tooth luxation; intrusive luxation of tooth means it’s been pushed upwards into the bone. It sounds nasty (and it kind of is), but we’ve got the tools and experience to handle it.
This one always needs a proper examination and a treatment plan – it could be repositioning, orthodontic help, or maybe root treatment.
You’ll notice:
Had a dental knock and not sure what’s going on? That’s where our Confident Smile Report comes in.
It’s a completely free, no-pressure assessment where we take a proper look at your teeth, gums, and jaw using advanced 3D scans (if it’s needed), check for hidden damage, and give you a clear picture of what’s really going on with absolutely no guesswork.
We’ll walk you through your options, whether your tooth needs stabilising, further treatment, or just a bit of extra care and monitoring.
We understand that dentistry can be overwhelming, so, to simplify the process for you, we provide all the necessary information in an easily digestible format. Our action plan is designed to guide you through the process, and we also provide estimates for costs and timelines.

First of all, there is no need to worry! We understand that you’re probably sore, maybe anxious, and wondering what’s going on, but we’ll keep things simple, explain everything, and get you comfortable again.
How things work around here:
You’ll tell us what happened and we’ll have a gentle look to see what’s going on.
We might use one of our 3D dental scans to check how the tooth and bone are doing under the surface. It’s a painless scan, and will give us a much better idea of the situation.
If your tooth needs moving, we’ll gently reposition it and secure it with a soft splint to help it heal.
Sometimes that’s all you’ll need, but in some situations, we might recommend a root canal or further checks down the line. Either way, we’ll explain it all clearly so you know exactly what to expect.
We’ll stay with you through the healing process, make sure everything’s going to plan, and keep you smiling confidently.
