Are Chin Fillers Permanent? | Do They Last Forever? - Smile Stories

Are Chin Fillers Permanent?

Chin fillers are one of the most sought-after cosmetic treatments here at Smile Stories and around the world because they give patients a long-lasting way of altering the shape of their chin without the costs, risks and downtime associated with surgery. But one question that often arises from those considering treatment for the first time is: are chin fillers permanent?

The most commonly used chin fillers in Bournemouth, throughout the UK and the world, are made from Hyaluronic acid (HA) due to their high levels of safety and reliability. The effects of these fillers are immediate and last 12-18 months. These chin fillers are not permanent and can be reversed if needed

Other dermal fillers are available on the market (we discuss these below), and whilst they are not commonly used in the chin, some clinics do offer them. However, none of these fillers lasts forever, but exactly how long they last depends on what they are made of.

What Are Chin Fillers?

Chin fillers are an injectable treatment option for those looking to effectively redefine and rejuvenate the chin’s shape. By strategically injecting fillers, volume is added to the chin, enhancing its prominence and ensuring it harmonizes with other facial features.

With careful planning and precise injection techniques, chin filler treatments can restore facial symmetry and balance.

Chin fillers can be used to correct a range of flaws and imperfections in the chin including the

  • Reduction of chin dimples and other surface irregularities
  • Improvement in chin contour and symmetry
  • Enlargement of chin and reduction of chin recession
  • Reduction in mild jowl formation

What are chin fillers made from and how long do they last?

There are several different types of filler available on the market – they differ in chemical makeup, and how long they last when injected.

Most clinics use HA, but it’s worth noting others as they may be used by some clinics. They can be made from

  • Hyaluronic acid – a natural substance found in your body that has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. The treatment is immediate and the effects are reversible. The same substance is often injected into the aching joints of people with arthritis to ease pain and provide extra cushioning. Approved brands include Juvéderm Juvéderm XC, VOLUMA, VOLBELLA, VOLLURE, Restylane Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne. They last for 12 – 18 months.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite –  a synthetic, biodegradable filler that is identical in composition to human bone and teeth. Its effects are delayed, and non-reversible.  Brands include Radiesse and they can last for up to 9-12 months.
  • Polyalkylimide – a semi-permanent, biocompatible and non-allergenic synthetic polymer. This filler can be surgically removed.
  • Polylactic acid – a semi‐permanent, synthetic polymer that is that has many medical uses. The results of this filler take a while to take shape and the effects are not reversible.  The effects last up to 2 years. Sculptra is FDA-approved.
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres (PMMA) – a biocompatible, permanent filler. The effects are delayed and it lasts for up to 5 years. Brands include Arteplast, Artecoll, Artefill and Bellafill.

If Chin Fillers Aren’t Permanent What Happens To It?

Hyaluronic acid fillers, while temporary, have varying durations depending on the brand used and the individual’s metabolism. The body naturally breaks down these fillers over time, causing the effects of the treatment to gradually diminish. Similar to the hyaluronic acid that naturally occurs in the skin, the injected hyaluronic acid filler is eventually absorbed back into the body as it breaks down.

Other fillers are not readily broken down in the body – making them less appealing to the general public.

Are Chin Fillers Reversible?

Again, this depends on what the chin filler is made from.

Hyaluronic acid fillers stand out as they are uniquely reversible. If there’s any dissatisfaction or complications arise, these fillers can be promptly neutralised using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This capability ensures greater control over the results of the treatment, allowing for adjustments or complete reversal if necessary. This makes them highly appealing to clinicians and clients alike.

The other chin fillers including PMMA, Polylactic acid and Calcium hydroxylapatite are not reversible – they cannot be removed.

Why Choose Temporary Fillers?

You might wonder why temporary fillers are preferred over permanent solutions. The key lies in their safety and flexibility. Temporary fillers offer a non-permanent solution that can be adjusted over time to suit changing aesthetic preferences or to adapt to natural ageing processes. This flexibility is crucial, as it allows adjustments to maintain a natural and harmonious appearance.

The Importance of Professional Administration

At our facial aesthetics clinic in Bournemouth, chin fillers are administered by a trained professional. This expertise is crucial for ensuring that the fillers are injected correctly and safely, offering the most aesthetically pleasing results. Our professional understanding of facial anatomy and aesthetics plays a vital role in achieving results that are both beautiful and natural-looking.

Since chin fillers are not permanent, maintenance treatments are necessary to retain the desired look. Most clients return for touch-ups once they notice the effects starting to fade. These regular visits not only help maintain the aesthetic but also provide an opportunity to adjust the treatment to any changes in facial structure or personal preferences.

Final Thoughts

Chin fillers are not permanent, but some clinics may use products that last longer than others. The dermal filler of choice for chin augmentation here at Smile Stories and throughout the UK is Hyaluronic acid which lasts for 12-18 months and can be topped up when required or reversed.
