Lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our bodies which helps to retain moisture and keep tissue lubricated.
When injected into the lips, the filler adds natural looking volume to the treated area in a safe and effective way. Some people are born with thin lips while others find that their lips start to lose shape or get thinner with age.
Lip fillers are therefore ideal for anyone who wants to have fuller, plumper looking lips or to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the lips.
To begin, we’ll have a chat to understand your specific requirements. We’ll ask you questions to understand what the ‘perfect lips’ look like to you, which will inform how much dermal filler is used during your treatment. We’ll also fill you in on everything you need to know before your treatment, such as which medications to avoid, advice on your beauty routine (i.e. avoiding topical products or hair removal cream just before treatment) and more.
Next, you’ll be invited to our facial aesthetics clinic located on Winton High Street in Bournemouth. During your appointment we will put you at ease and answer any questions you have before starting the treatment.
Reem, our licensed and certified facial aesthetics pharmacist, will then clean the treatment area and apply a numbing anaesthetic cream. She will then start placing the dermal filler into your lips in precise areas, massaging the filler into place afterward to ensure natural and even spread.
Once we have achieved the desired look, we’ll talk to you about any aftercare instructions and your treatment will be complete.

After your lip filler treatment, you can pretty much go about your day as normal and you’ll notice that your lips are much plumper straight away. There will be some additional swelling right after your treatment session, so don’t panic if you think they look too big, that is completely normal. The swelling usually takes around 2 – 3 days to settle down and should be completely settled within 2 weeks maximum.
There are a few things that we recommend you don’t do directly after your lip filler treatment though, such as vigorous exercise, eating lots of salty foods, visiting a steam room or sauna or applying makeup to your lips within the first 24 hours. You should also avoid sleeping on your back or front for 24 hours.
Once the swelling has subsided, your lips will look naturally you, just version 2.0.
Lip fillers are not permanent, but they do last long enough to be worthwhile. You can expect the added volume to last for anywhere between 6 and 18 months. When you feel that the lip filler has worn off, we’ll be happy to top it back up for you!

Whether you live in Bournemouth, Poole, or anywhere else in Dorset, Smile Stories is here to help you regain your confidence.
Our facial aesthetics and dental clinic is based on Winton High Street, but we offer lip filler treatments to the whole of Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and Dorset. We’re always happy to offer an initial telephone call, or chat on WhatsApp before you visit, and don’t forget we offer complimentary personalised Facial Sculpting Analyses to help you understand how we can meet your goals before you come and visit us.
Our lip filler treatments start at £156.00 per session. Most people only require one session every 12 – 18 months.
Lip filler injections are generally painless. We first apply an anaesthetic numbing cream to your lips before injecting them and our dermal filler pharmacist is specially trained to conduct the treatment in a safe and painless manner. Because you’re having treatment in a dental environment, we can also numb your lips in the same way the dentist would numb a tooth so you won’t feel a thing.
Lip filler swelling is most noticeable for 24 hours after your treatment. The swelling starts to subside after 2 – 3 days and should be gone completely within 2 weeks.
While there is no strong evidence to suggest that lip fillers are dangerous for pregnant or breastfeeding women, we recommend that you don’t get lip fillers whilst pregnant or breastfeeding, just to be extra careful for your little one.
We recommend that you avoid smoking for 24 – 48 hours after your lip filler treatment to reduce the chances of injection and to prevent your lips becoming misshapen.
We recommend that you avoid drinking alcohol for 24 hours after your lip filler treatment as alcohol can cause blood thinning which may result in increased inflammation or bruising around your lips.
Yes, you can eat directly after lip filler treatment (although you might want to wait for the numbing cream to wear off). We suggest avoiding very salty foods for 24 hours.
You might be keen to test out your new lips on your partner, but we suggest waiting 48 – 72 hours after your treatment until kissing as this can apply a lot of pressure to the lips and expose them to bacteria which could (in rare instances) cause infection.
Yes, lip fillers will naturally dissolve over the course of 6 – 18 months post treatment. If you are unhappy with your current lip filler, we can also help to dissolve it faster.
You should avoid sunbathing or using sunbeds for around 2 weeks after your lip filler treatment.
